Torture Masks is a series of experimental paintings on canvas paper inspired during a semester abroad to Florence, Italy. The inspiration comes from torture instruments at the Hohensalzburg Fortress Museum in Salzburg, Austria. These instruments, originating in the 16th century, were created to publicly manipulate and shame people who committed crimes. Torture Masks compares these historical torture instruments to the current US incarceration system. Embarrassment, shame, mental illness and addiction all playing into a cycle fulled by control.
